Blurb

Damian Tate. One look into his sad green eyes and I was hooked. I wanted to be the one to make him laugh, to make him smile. I hadn't expected him to be the one to make me blush, to make me hot...to make me fall in love. He was my first kiss, my first love, my first everything. I wanted forever with him, but life got in the way.

He enlisted, I went to college, and for years we were never in the same place long enough to pick up where we left off.

Thirteen years after he left, tragedy brings him home. The stoic boy I fell in love with grew into a quiet, dangerous and wildly sexy man. He still tugs on all the right strings for me, but he seems determined to keep me at arm's-length.

However, when trouble comes knocking at my door, he is the one to put himself between that trouble and me.

Spending time with him might drive me insane, or it might be our second chance at first love.

Excerpt

Before I could scan the crowd for Damian, a hand wrapped around mine...one with cuts and blood on the knuckles. It was Damian and he looked pissed.

ā€œWhat the fuck are you doing here?ā€

My heart hurt seeing his faceā€”a cut near his left eye, blood smeared down his cheek and a blooming bruise on his jaw. ā€œI heard you and Cam talking. I was curious.ā€

He had been walking me toward the exit but those words stopped him. His feet sort of rooted themselves to the concrete floor as his head turned in my direction. ā€œSo you walked here alone?ā€

ā€œIt wasnā€™t far.ā€

That wasnā€™t the right answer apparently because he hissed between his teeth. It wasnā€™t an actual word, just a release of frustration.

He started toward the exit again. ā€œWhat are you fighting when you are out there?ā€

We had just reached the stairs when he pulled me behind them and pressed me up against the wall. ā€œCome again?ā€

ā€œWhen you fight, what are you fighting?ā€

ā€œNot who am I fighting?ā€

ā€œNo, your opponent isnā€™t what youā€™re fighting.ā€

He leaned in and lowered his head to look me right in the eyes. ā€œHow do you know that?ā€

I gently wiped the blood from his face. ā€œI know you.ā€

He had the strangest reaction to that. He closed his eyes, like he was in pain, and lowered his forehead to my shoulder. ā€œThis canā€™t happen.ā€

Those words caused a chill to move right down my spine. He was wrong. It totally could and should happen. ā€œWhy not?ā€

He lifted his head and for the first time I saw so much more in those eyes. ā€œCam is a good friend and your parents are like my own.ā€

ā€œAnd?ā€

His lips brushed along my jaw and I had to lock my knees to keep from sliding down the wall. ā€œAnd if I did to you all the things I wanted, I couldnā€™t sit at their table without them knowing that I claimed every part of you.ā€

Death of the Spirit (Crossing Death #2) by Rick Chiantaretto Blog Tour

Death of the Spirit *Crossing Death #2* Genre~Dark Fantasy/Occult I have no idea who I am anymore. In Los Angeles, I would have given anything to go home to Orenda, my world where magic was alive and nature spoke to me. Now that I'm back I feel out of place, burdened with responsibility. The human part of me misses the simplicity of Earth, the mage part begs for connection with magic, and the demon part? I don't want to admit that exists. As the darkness inside me grows, Iā€™ll learn to sacrifice for the greater good, as my people have always done. In order to save my family (both mage and human alike), I must face my nightmare, embrace the demon, and descend into the shadowy world of my enemyā€”the Hell of the Damned. Once there, I will have nothing left to fear but myself: Edmund Gavel, human, mage, demon... maybe monster.
