Book Description
Everyone has a best friend. Mine just happens to be Dr. Christian Gallagherā€” the gorgeous, green-eyed heart surgeon who wants to have a baby with me.

Yes, you read that correctly.

When my mother approached me on my thirty-third birthday with a brochure for egg freezing, it was a glaring reminder that my biological clock is ticking toward its expiration date. Iā€™ve always dreamed of being a mom and had a plan ā€” one that was destroyed when I caught my professional hockey player husband in bed with another woman.

Despite my broken heart I still believe in love. I want the happily ever after, but I also want a child desperately and won't settle in order to make it happen.

Thatā€™s why when I decided to take my motherā€™s advice, Christian came up with his own plan: Letā€™s have a baby together.

Itā€™s a bad idea. A really, really bad idea. And yet...I canā€™t stop thinking about how great it could be.

Thereā€™s just one condition. Before we have sex (oh, yes, weā€™re doing this the old fashioned way!) Christian is adamant we go on three dates.

Sounds easy, but it's not.I thought sex would be the hard part, but the dates are only making me fall for the man Iā€™ve known almost my entire life.

Whoever said sex doesn't change things never went to bed with their best friend.

ā€œMeadow,ā€ Christian calls after me.

I stop and swing around. Heā€™s standing outside an exam room, looking like heā€™s about to go inside.

I walk over to him, and as I approach, he looks down at me with those kind eyes and asks, ā€œYou okay?ā€

ā€œYeah, why?ā€

ā€œThat comment you made before about your eggs shriveling up and dying.ā€

I place a hand on my forehead as I feel ten kinds of embarrassed. ā€œOh, yeah. I was just joking.ā€

ā€œYou brought it up the other day, too.ā€

I shake my head and lower my hand to rest it on my hip. ā€œI think itā€™s my birthday coming up. You know, getting older sucks.ā€

A loose strand of hair falls out of my low ponytail and into my eye. He wraps a finger around it and pushes it behind my ear.

ā€œYouā€™ll tell me if something is worrying you, right?ā€

ā€œDonā€™t I always?ā€

ā€œNo,ā€ he answers quickly, and I curve my brows in question. ā€œYou internalize until it eats you up and youā€™ve made some crazy, rash decision.ā€

I adore him, except for his ability to know everything about me. Well, almost everything.

ā€œName one time,ā€ I challenge him.

ā€œYou got married without even telling me you were engaged.ā€

ā€œThatā€™s pretty much the point of eloping.ā€

He looks at me from under those thick lashes and tilts his head. I know what heā€™s thinking. That was a tense time in our friendship. He was across the countryā€”had been for years alreadyā€”when, suddenly, I called to say I was a married woman. The distance had already put a strain on our friendship. Brockā€™s inability to understand how close Christian and I were only made it worse.

Christian gives a self-deprecating smile and then pauses meaningfully. ā€œWhatā€™s on your mind?ā€

If you only knew ā€¦

ā€œIā€™m fine. Stop fussing over me. Iā€™m excited to meet Natasha. I didnā€™t know you were seeing someone.ā€

ā€œIā€™m not. Weā€™re justā€”ā€

ā€œFooling around in supply closets. I get it,ā€ I say with a cheeky grin.

He lowers his forehead a touch and speaks as if heā€™s about to tell me a secret, ā€œI wouldnā€™t have to sneak away in closets if you gave in to my wit and charm.ā€

The way he says the words makes my stomach flutter and my body tingle in response. Any other girl would think he was serious. I, on the other hand, know better. He says things like that for my ego, which he thinks is shattered even though my self-confidence is pretty well intact.

ā€œI wasnā€™t aware it was being offered,ā€ I answer jokingly.

ā€œThen, Iā€™m not doing a good enough job.ā€

ā€œGo to work, Dr. Gallagher,ā€ I scold and turn him around toward his office where Iā€™m sure heā€™s way behind schedule.

I walk down the hall toward exam room four and grab the file thatā€™s sitting in the holder on the door. I sneak a glance back to see Christian watching me as I walk away, pretending Iā€™m not walking to the beat of my own biological clock.

Death of the Spirit (Crossing Death #2) by Rick Chiantaretto Blog Tour

Death of the Spirit *Crossing Death #2* Genre~Dark Fantasy/Occult I have no idea who I am anymore. In Los Angeles, I would have given anything to go home to Orenda, my world where magic was alive and nature spoke to me. Now that I'm back I feel out of place, burdened with responsibility. The human part of me misses the simplicity of Earth, the mage part begs for connection with magic, and the demon part? I don't want to admit that exists. As the darkness inside me grows, Iā€™ll learn to sacrifice for the greater good, as my people have always done. In order to save my family (both mage and human alike), I must face my nightmare, embrace the demon, and descend into the shadowy world of my enemyā€”the Hell of the Damned. Once there, I will have nothing left to fear but myself: Edmund Gavel, human, mage, demon... maybe monster.
