RUBY'S PASSION EXCERPT
The night sky was clear and James easily cut through the woods between their houses. It was a straight shot to the house, but without the full moon or the bare trees, James wasn't sure he would’ve made it before her. To his relief, when he came upon the house, the light was still on in their kitchen. He skipped up the steps of the porch and burst through the door.
Jo sat at the table, swiping a flour and water paste over one end of a thin rectangular piece of red paper. In front of her there was a spattering of paper decorations for the upcoming Christmas holiday—paper doves and snowflakes, knitted stockings, dried flowers and twigs. Jack sat across from the table helping Tommy whittle a piece of wood into an unknown object.
There was no sign of Ruby.
At the sound of the screen door creaking open, Jack stood, alarm blanketing his face. "James! Is something wrong with Ruby?"
Jo came next to Jack and put her arm in his, grasping it in concern.
"Yes. No, not like that. She's run off."
"Where?" Jo asked, looking over James’s shoulder as if Ruby might appear at any moment.
"She's on her way here. I took the shortcut."
"Why did she run off?" Jack asked. Tommy had stopped his carving and was watching the small group curiously. James kept his voice low.
"I think she's worried about” —he glanced at Jo, uncomfortable with having the conversation in front of her—"the marriage act."
"Oh," Jo said, surprise crossing her features. "But I spoke to her."
"Still. In some ways she's very much a child," James said.
"I know what you mean, but she was very"—this time Jo glanced at Jack, unsure if she should go on—"eager to, uh, discuss it."
James stood awkwardly unsure what else to say in mixed company. Jo and Jack exchanged a look, and a silent decision was made that he’d continue the conversation with James outside on the porch.
"I'll go take Tommy to bed," Jo said. "Send Ruby in when she comes. I'm sure this is a topic she'd rather discuss with me than her father. James, why don't you help yourself to some of our whiskey. I think you need it.
