One, two, three, four, five . . . the lyrics to the hell inside your OCD head.
Not alive, not dead. In chains.
You’re broken, Amy. I did this. Can’t undo that.
Six years ago, I played a cruel joke on you in front of the whole school. The girl who made a happiness machine to put her happy inside of me. And I just ripped your heart out.
Now, I’m back to fix what I broke. I’m a psychologist, Amy. I can give you back the happiness I stole . . .
It’s all a lie. I’m not a doctor.
So what. She doesn’t get a choice.
So what if I buy the Victorian estate she lives in, blackmail her into fake therapy sessions.
So what if I get her addicted to my body like a painkiller, make her wish me dead.
I’m not the hero. I’m the monster. The orphan boy gone bad. Cursed, everything broken.
So what, when I discover a dark secret that makes her every inch off-limits, I don’t keep my hands off her.
Her bones are made from emeralds, she’s that precious.
I won’t stop chasing her until she’s mine.
But Amy is a pretty little liar, too. Her lie is the deadliest of them all.
Only one of us is telling the truth.
So bloody what. Nobody’s gonna believe her over me.
It’s her word . . .
. . . against MINE.
You’re in a bad place, Amy, where the monsters go. But it’s only in the bad places . . . I can get to you.
Disclaimer: No cheating — this alpha-hole keeps it in his pants.
UNITED INDIE BOOK BLOG REVIEW
RATING: 4 STARS
So its been awhile since I've read a dark romance which means it took me awhile to get into the mind frame of the story. Like way to long that I almost quit the book but I didn't. I kept reading and I'm glad I did. This story shows you how ugly the world is and what people will do to get ahead. It shows that despite how you came into the world, you can change your future and overcome the ugly past. You can find love and be happy. I loved the little moments we got when Shepherd and Amy were young and in the home. It was sweet until he hurt her and destroyed her life. My favorite quote that made me laugh but explains exactly what Shepherd was like throughout this book," You make Hitler look like a fluffy bunny and I'm not scared of you anymore." I wouldn't say Shepherd was evil, he just had a game he liked to play with Amy. He has a purpose behind it and it worked. I will say you will have to definitely pay attention to who's talking in each chapter cause this isn't your normal book. It captivates you. I will say the last half of this book is better then the beginning and that may be cause all the secrets come out and Shepherd becomes human again. My head was spinning when all the secrets came out. It was so crazy and disturbing with all of it.
This kinda ties what Shepherd and Amy are and why they have such a strong connection together. There's string that ties them together. It doesn't matter that there's times she doesn't want to see him, she will still go and see him despite him being a jerk to her.
"Amy, wake up and see what I am. Darkness to fight your darkness. Evil to fight your evil. I'm all darkness, all evil, and I did what I did all the years ago to protect you." He was always there to protect her despite destroying her life.
