In a sprint, every millisecond counts.
When you're waiting for love, those milliseconds can feel like eons.
High school senior Lucas Preston has it all: star of the track team, a scholarship waiting for him, an apartment to himself and a revolving door of girlfriends. He also has an older sister, five younger brothers and a father who relies on him to make sure those brothers don't kill each other.
His saving grace? Lois "Laney" Sanders, a girl he started to fall in like with when he was just eleven.
A girl who became his best friend, his confidant, his courage.
It took only sixteen clicks and eight seconds for Lucas to realize that his like for Laney had turned into love.
Eight life-changing seconds.
It's also the exact length of time it took to lose her.

There isn't a book that Jay McLean has written that didn't suck me in and keep me hostage with its words! She has a way of telling a story, so vivid, so vibrant and so true that you can't help but be drawn in. Feel what the characters are feeling and either cry with them or laugh with them, sometimes both! She is one of my all time favorite angst queens!
If you're new to Jays books, you can totally read this as a stand alone, but be warned, IF you want to read her other More Than series, Lucas DOES contain spoilers of More than Forever (book 4 in the More series). More than Forever is when we first meet Lucy, Lucas and the rest of the Preston siblings.
***And I wonder if I’ll ever get the image, the feel, of her limp body in my arms out of my system.
Sixteen clicks. Eight seconds. That’s how long it took me to realize I’d been in love with her for four years.
Eight, life-changing seconds. It’s also the exact length of time it took to lose her.
Right off the bat, McLean hits you in the feels!! She gives you a glimpse into the pain and anguish that Lucas is going through, but you need to read to the end, to understand the beginning.
Lucas and Lois met when they were 11 years old, when Laney (his nickname for her) moved not to far from the Preston crew. Each have their own stories, their own path and their own trials in their lives, even at 11.
They quickly became the best of friends, and over time, secretly fell in love with each other. But it's not that simple. For either of them. Keeping feelings hidden and doing the duty of best friends only leaves them suffering and in misery. Until one night. One night and everything changes.
Now, they are left picking up the pieces of their tattered friendship and troubles their families are going through as well. Lucas has 5 brothers and 1 sister, and he is trying to be a good role model for them.
Lucas is a great character! I love him so much! He is strong, confident, very family oriented and does what he can for those he loves. He makes mistakes, but he's learning - always learning. When tragedy strikes, he steps up and takes care of his family, making them his number one priority.
Lois, she's the quiet reserved girl who is struggling with things in her own life. The Preston crew gladly accepted her as she is and gave her a second family. She stole the heart of Lucas and the entire Preston crew from the very first day.
***“Luke’s family doesn’t just open up their home, they open up their hearts.”
All the characters are so well developed, that you feel like you belong in the family with them. Each has their own flaws but you love them anyways. I love McLean's More Than series and was so happy to see more of the Prestons. I hope we get more stories for the rest of the boys! It will be so much fun seeing them how they grow and how much more mayhem they can get into! Definitely would recommend this book!
