EXCERPT:
To Logan, Iβm just the nanny, watching his kid. But in the book world, even though Iβve sucked for the past few years, Iβm still very well known. If the tabloids put a picture out of Logan Sterns with his mystery girl and my readers saw it, they would go insane. And I donβt want that sort of attention.
βWhy, Boston? You embarrassed to be seen with me?β he teases.
βNo,β I answer quickly. βItβs not that Iβm embarrassed. But if pictures got out, my readers would jump to conclusions. You know, about you and me. And thatβd just make things weird.β
βOr theyβd eat that shit up, and youβd be forced to write a hockey romance about a hot single dad.β He winks. βNow, thatβs got a nice ring to it, donβt you think?β
βNo.β I try to give him an annoyed look.
But the truth is, since being around him, Iβve had a new story plot brewing in my mind. One about a single father who happens to be insanely good-looking. Oh, and he plays professional hockey.
I canβt tell him all of that. Heβll think Iβm a stalker.
βYouβre so going to make me your muse, arenβt you?β His smirk only intensifies. βWait β¦ can I be on the cover?β
βNo!β I reach forward, swatting his arm lightly. βYou are not my muse. And, no, you cannot be on my cover!β
βYouβre no fun.β He sighs. βAs for fans at Christmas Land with the shitty cookies, Iβll wear a hat and sunglasses, and no one will know who I am. Hopefully.β
βAll right,β I utter. βAre you going to choose something to watch?β I wave toward my bowl. βMy popcorn is nearly gone, and you just keep scrolling past everything.β
βIβll make you more,β he tosses back. βHey, before I put on a show and we space out on whatever trash I choose, can I ask you, when is your next book release?β
βWhy?β I scowl, not able to stop myself.
βWhoa. Calm down, sparky.β He shakes his head. βI just wanted to know so I could give you the day off for it. I mean β¦ thatβs a huge deal.β
Relaxing, I instantly feel bad. βSorry,β I breathe out. βItβs a sore subject. Writing hasnβt exactly been easy the past few years.β I sit a little taller. βBut a few days ago, I wrote a few hundred words, and Iβm really hoping that if I continue to write, I can have a spring release.β
βAre your books dirty?β His eyes narrow, a sneaky smirk on his lips.
βNo,β I lie.
βThey totally are.β He grins. βWhere can one get these books?β
βThey are all sold out. Everywhere,β I lie again. βGuess youβre out of luck.β
He gives me a playful once-over. βThat was a test, Miss Maci. I already found your books. I also know they are dirty as hell. Iβm telling ya, you need a hockey book.β He waves his hand at himself. βThe ladies love them a puck boy.β
βOh my God. I cannot believe you looked up my books!β I whine as my cheeks heat, to the point of damn near pain. βOkay, weβre done talking about this. Time to find something to watch.β
He tosses me the remote, and I begin searching through Netflix.
βOh, and, Maci?β I can hear the amusement dripping from his voice.
βWhat?β I huff out, terrified of what heβs going to say next.
βYou can totally use me as inspo, just FYI. I give my permission.β
I peek over, and he winks.
βI know; Iβm pretty inspirational.β
The embarrassment I was just feeling slowly fades. Rolling my eyes, I bark out a laugh. βIβm not even going to respond to that. Now, be quiet. Letβs watch Love Island. You wanted trashy? You got it.β
He starts to say something, but I hold my hand up, silencing him.
βNo more talk of my books, or Iβm going to leave right now.β
I glance at him to see him pouting. Slowly, he turns his attention toward the screen, and thank the Lord, he leaves me alone.
He might not know itβand Iβll never admit it out loudβbut he is already my inspiration.
Because β¦ hello β¦ heβs Logan freaking Sterns.
BLURB:
As a single father, I often feel like the weight of the world sits on my shoulders. When my daughterβs nanny gives me her two weeksβ notice, Iβm sweating bullets. Fear that my NHL season with the New England Bay Sharks could be derailed consumes me.
Finding a replacement seems impossible when, suddenly, Maci McKenzieβa struggling author whoβs running from some deep, dark secret in her pastβsteps into the picture. She needs a change of scenery to help her write, and I just need someone who isnβt a complete weirdo to watch my kid when Iβm not around.
As we grow closer, I learn sheβs struggling to write the so-called βspicyβ scenes. And, well, me being the nice fella I am, I offer my assistance and show her how a real man should treat a woman in between the sheets. Itβs the perfect deal really. I get off, and she gets the inspiration she needs to write a book.
And not just any book β¦ a hockey romance book.
But like all deals, itβs not black-and-white. Soon, I find myself falling in love with the woman. But the closer I get to her β¦ the further she pulls away. Then, I finally find out whatβs haunting her from her past.
Whoever says the truth will set you free has never heard a secret like this one.
