On Monday, I carried a sandwich into the garage, setting it on the workbench. It had been a hectic morning, and Iā€™d barely had time to talk to Maxx at all. At one point heā€™d received a call that heā€™d walked outside to take, and when he came back, his glower was deeper than usual. I knew better than to ask him about it, though. Instead, I stayed busy.

Maxx was talking to a customer as I went by. He was busy with his hands as he worked on a nice-looking Yamaha. But he glanced up, and I offered him a smile. ā€œYour lunch, boss man, whenever youā€™re hungry.ā€

He nodded, his attention on the man he was talking to. The man chuckled. ā€œWowā€”sheā€™s good. You get lunch?ā€

Maxx made a low noise, and the customer stepped forward, his hand outstretched. ā€œCam.ā€

I shook his hand. ā€œCharly.ā€

ā€œPleasure.ā€ He indicated Maxx. ā€œYouā€™re far cuter than this lug. You smile too.ā€

I had to laugh. ā€œItā€™s part of the service now.ā€

ā€œWhat else is included?ā€ Cam teased.

ā€œI want those numbers this afternoon, Charly,ā€ Maxx snapped. ā€œStop flirting and get to work.ā€

Cam threw back his head in amusement. ā€œI hope you get paid well for putting up with the attitude.ā€

ā€œI think Maxx considers that one of the perks.ā€

Cam chuckled and looked at Maxx. ā€œI like this one.ā€

Maxx snorted. Like a real blow the air through your nose and huff at the same time sort of snort. He glared at Cam. ā€œHands off my staff. I have a firm no mixing business with pleasure policy. Charly canā€™t date my customers.ā€

I managed to hide my surprise at his words. He had never mentioned anything of the sort. And I highly doubted Cam was looking for a date. His tone was teasing and friendly but not personal. He didnā€™t look remotely interested in me. His next words confirmed that.

Cam frowned. ā€œMy wife will be happy to hear that, Maxx. Relax. I was just being nice.ā€ He eyed him. ā€œYou might want to try it.ā€

ā€œIā€™m plenty nice.ā€

I had to turn and walk away to stop my laughter. Cam spoke again. ā€œBack to the event. You have to go, Maxx.ā€

ā€œI canā€™t. Iā€™m booked solid.ā€

ā€œCanā€™t you put it off?ā€

ā€œNo. I canā€™t just close the garage, Cam.ā€

ā€œItā€™s an amazing opportunity.ā€

My steps faltered. What opportunity?

ā€œI guess itā€™s one I will simply have to say no to.ā€

Cam huffed and called my name. ā€œCharly!ā€

ā€œUm, yes?ā€

ā€œCan you reschedule your boss here so he can be gone for a while?ā€

I met Maxxā€™s expression. It was filled with warning, intense and dark. Telling me not to speak.

I decided to push back a little. I was tired of being quiet. ā€œI can check.ā€
Cam smirked and crossed his arms. ā€œGreat.ā€

Death of the Spirit (Crossing Death #2) by Rick Chiantaretto Blog Tour

Death of the Spirit *Crossing Death #2* Genre~Dark Fantasy/Occult I have no idea who I am anymore. In Los Angeles, I would have given anything to go home to Orenda, my world where magic was alive and nature spoke to me. Now that I'm back I feel out of place, burdened with responsibility. In order to save my family (both mage and human alike), I must face my nightmare, embrace the demon, and descend into the shadowy world of my enemyā€”the Hell of the Damned.
