EXCERPT
āAdmit it, you were scared when you first saw me, but when you
woke up, I was wearing the glasses. Your opinion changed. You thought
I was smart. Most people trust someone they perceive as intelligentā¦and
relatively harmless.ā
āYou mean nerdy. You wear glasses so people think youāre smart. Why
is it you have to convince anyone of that?ā
āIāll admit Iām not a patient person. I donāt want to have to continually
convince people I know what Iām doing. Iā¦I did a lot ofā¦convincingā¦
when I was a kid. I wonāt do it again. You asked who I was earlier. Iām a
computer expert.ā
Okay. āBut not a normal techy.ā Normal techies didnāt have underground
hidey-holes. āSo, what is it? Information officer for the military. Hacker
for the CIA. What?ā Sheād feel a lot better if she knew heād gone through
some security clearance.
āYou watch too much TV.ā
āI donāt watch any television. Except for The Bachelor, and thatās purely
for business.ā That was her story and she was sticking to it. āAnd who else
but the government would fund a place like this?ā
He sighed like a man not used to people questioning him. āI work for
an agency that specializes in search and recover. Every team member has
a role. Iām the computer guy. Mostly, our job is to findā¦things.ā
āJudging from the hardware out there, Iād say they donāt hire you to
find their missing pet.ā Of that she was certain.
āNo.ā
āAnd isnāt it the policeās job to findā¦things?ā
āSometimes,ā he said.
āYou with the police?ā How much could she trust him?
āYouāre asking too many questions.ā
āPut yourself in my shoes.ā
He got up and went into the kitchen. āHow about some food? All you
had was soup, and I havenāt eaten since this morning.ā
Why didnāt he want to answer her? āAvoiding my questions when youāre
stuck with me for who knows how long isnāt going to work.ā
āIām not avoiding. Iām hungry.ā He opened a cupboard and pulled out
a large can. āChili? It says right on the can, fit for kings.ā
āSure,ā she said, more to stay agreeable than actually looking forward to
canned chili. She joined him. āYou donāt work with the police. Do you work
against them?ā Although even to herself that sounded like a stupid question,
because if he didāif what they did was illegalāhe wouldnāt tell her.
