This book started out a little slow, but then picked right up with gangsters, street fighters, a dirty politician and a broken family - actually two broken families.  

Rae is the daughter of the Mayor, she has always felt his indifference towards her but hasn't a clue as to why.  She was only a month old when her mom killed herself, leaving her with her dad, a new step mom and her sister, Lucy.  She also has her best friend, Bennett, who has been there for her for most of her life, gets her through the hard times.  

When her sister is on the wrong side of town, Southie - a place her father strictly forbid them to ever go - and wants to get into a club to see a fight starring Flynn, she asks for Rae's help to get in.  Knowing it's a bad idea, she and Bennett go to the club to try to get Lucy and her friends in.  There, in a dark alley, is where she meets Jack.  She is drawn to him for some reason, like an invisible cord tethered the two together.  Instant attraction.  

Little did she know at the time, but Jack is the brother of the man she sent to prison seven years ago, naming him as her attacker.  She is finalizing realizing though, that her father pretty much controlled what she said that night, pointing the finger to Sean. Now, she's not so sure he was the one who attacked her.  She remembers dark, soulless eyes, and those are not the description of Sean's.  

So, she seeks out to find the person who really attacked her, getting Jack to help her, now that's another story.  He is angry with her and wants nothing to do with her, at first.  But they both seem to find out that there is way more involved in their story than just an innocent man going to prison.  Deciding to snoop in the Mayors private office, she finds letters, addressed to a priest in Southie.  She immediately recognized the handwriting, it belonged to her mother.  Wondering why the Mayor had encrypted postcards sent to a priest in her mothers handwriting, sets her on a journey that will change her life. 

***Each postcard is addressed to the same person and the message has the same structure: a series of nonsensical letters and numbers followed by a month in Irish and yet another number. Some of the top sequences are exactly the same, others have a similar variation, and I just want to bang my head into the counter until something starts to make sense.

The story ended up being pretty good, lots of drama and twists.  The backstory and character depth was fascinating.  Each with their own sorted take to tell. And when they discover just how connected they all are, will chase them all forever.
